On the afternoon of 20 May 2021, the CNOOC Energy Economics Institute (EEI) and the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP) of the University of Dundee held a webinar that laid down the foundations for future collaboration.
At the beginning of the meeting, President Wang Zhen, on behalf of the EEI, introduced the organizational structure, the research work, and the role as a think tank supporting the overall work of CNOOC of the EEI. In next, Sun Ying, the Vice President of the EEI, introduced in detail the setup and main research directions of the centers of the Institute and she hoped that both sides would strengthen cooperation in research areas.
Subsequently, Prof. Peter Cameron and Dr. Xiaoyi Mu from the University of Dundee briefly introduced CEPLMP, which is currently focusing on energy economics, energy management, and international energy law and is seeking to expand the research into the areas of climate economics.
Finally, the two sides discussed the simmering topics of common interests- energy transition and carbon neutrality - including how to transform and upgrade the energy structure, how to reduce fossil energy consumption, and how CNOOC, as a conventional offshore oil and gas company, could transform itself to help China achieve the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.
During the meeting and discussions, the two sides agreed to deepen the cooperation in different aspects, including project cooperation, staff exchange and training, and collaborative researches in carbon neutrality and energy transition.
Both sides agreed the meeting is a cooperative beginning, and based on the beginning they will frame the cooperation into a detailed roadmap and practical programs, and establish routined communication channels.
